Arizona Department of Health Services Grants for Accelerated Nursing Degrees
Program Description
The Arizona Department of Health Services has provided grant funds to five nursing programs to be used for scholarships. These programs are designed for students to complete a bachelor's or master's nursing degree in 12-18 months. Recipients of the grant must agree to practice nursing in Arizona for at least four years upon the completion of their degrees.
Program Goals and Impacts
The goal of the Arizona Department of Health Services Grants for Accelerated Nursing Degrees is to increase the number of students in accelerated nursing programs. Impacts include increased capacity within accelerated nursing degrees and an increase of new graduates entering the workforce.
Funding Information
Multiple organizations received funding via this program including Arizona State University: $5.6 million for 104 scholarships, Creighton University (Phoenix): $5.9 million for 80 scholarships, Grand Canyon University: $16 million for 300 scholarships, Northern Arizona University: $6.4 million for 240 scholarships, University of Arizona: $9.2 million for 158 scholarships. In addition, The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) awarded Creighton University $6 million in capital costs associated with adding a cohort of accelerated nursing students.
Program Sustainability
To attain sustainability there is a need for planned post-grant internal resources in education facilities and healthcare organizations. Organizational funding and commitment to continue post-graduation transition and residency programs.

Sufficient nursing faculty.
Adequate clinical sites.
Student recruitment.
Physical space.
Trained nurse mentors at clinical sites.
