Graduate Medical Education Residency Program

Program Description 

The Graduate Medical Education Residency Program is a program for qualifying community health centers and rural clinics. This program supports and expands the number of primary care residency positions, provides support and technical assistance for starting or expanding primary care residency programs in rural areas and health professional shortage areas, facilitates information and resource sharing, and provides training and technical assistance.

Program Goals and Impacts

The Graduate Medical Education Residency Program's goal is to encourage students to complete their residencies at community health centers or rural clinics. Another goal is to expand the residency programs at these facilities. Impacts of this program include additional primary care residency programs available to graduate school students. 

Funding Information

The sum of $5,000,000 is appropriated one time from the state general fund in fiscal year 2023/2024 to the Arizona area health education system. The Arizona area health education system may use up to $500,000 of the appropriation to support a collaboration of qualifying community health centers and rural health clinics' primary care residency programs.

To attain sustainability community health centers, rural clinics and tribal health facilities maintain primary care residency programs and supporting resources.
